Back in 2008, adidas debuted the original A-ZX series. The project pushed the boundaries of what the evolving field of special release product could achieve, with a comprehensive trip through the legendary range of ZX running shoes that paired a collaborative partner with the corresponding letter of the alphabet. (Incidentally, the ‘B’ in the original A-ZX was represented by a fondly remembered Bodega ZX 8000.)
A-ZX makes a triumphant return in 2020, with another deep dive into the ZX archive. This time around, instead of collaborative partners, each letter of the alphabet represents a different, conceptual tribute to the high tech running footwear that represented the era’s pinnacle of athletic performance.
U is for The U. During the '80s, the Miami Hurricanes simply took over the world of Divison I football, in a way that no one had ever seen before. They didn't just win. They laid absolute waste to everything in their path, in a style that embodied the phrase 'in your face.' Old fashioned purists were horrified, but the youth were captivated.
The A-ZX ZX 5000 pays tribute to the U with a design mimicing the stylized U on a white backdrop of the iconic Miami Hurricanes helmet, as a tonal white nylon mesh and leather upper is offset with a metallic heel support structure in green and orange. Like Jimmy Johnson's hair, every last detail is in place.
